Lead Paint

EPA Federal Rules and Regulations (40 CFR Part 745) requires that any Firm working on a home or building that will directly disturb lead based paint must be certified.  If the firm is not certified, they must be directed and properly trained by a Certified Firm.  This includes work such as window replacement, paint scraping and sanding, siding replacement, rotten wood replacement, pressure washing, etc......

GTM General Contracting, Inc. is a Certified RRP Lead Renovation Contractor.  Our services include lead paint testing, demolition, renovations, worker training and jobsite management.

Lead based paint is defined by Federal standards as any paint or surface coating that contains lead equal to or in excess of 1.0 milligram per square centimeter or more than 0.5% by weight.  Lead paint was used to add color and durability to paint in homes built during or before 1978.  In 1978, the Consumer Products Safety Commission banned the sale of lead based paint for residential use.

The probability that a home has lead based paint is:

Homes Built Pre 1940                87%

Homes Built 1940 to 1960         69%

Homes Built 1960 to 1978         24%

Health Risks of Lead

Children are at a greater risk than adults because their bodies are developing.  They are more likely during normal activity to swallow or inhale dust from their hands, toys, food, or other objects.  Lead can cause nervous system and kidney damage, decreased intelligence, attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, speech problems, language and behavior problems.

Pregnant women may experience miscarriages, premature births, fetus brain damage, and low birth weights.

Adults may experience high blood pressure, fertility problems, digestive problems, nerve disorders, memory and concentration problems, sexual disorders, muscle and joint pains.
